Fresh Apple Cake

1 1/2 cup sifted all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 1/2 cup grated apples
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1/4 cup chopped walnuts

Grease and flour an 8″x8″ cake pan. Sift flour, salt, & spices. Combine grated apples with baking soda. Beat shortening, sugar, & egg until fluffy. Stir flour mixture alternately with apple mix. Beat well. Add nuts. Pour into prepared pan and bake at 350 F for 30 – 40 minutes. Frost with Lemon Butter Frosting or Honey Frosting.


1/4 cup butter, softened
1-1/2 – 2 cups icing sugar
1/2 teaspoon grated lemon rind
1-1/2 tablespoons lemon juice

Cream butter. Add lemon rind & juice.

Add icing sugar.

Beat until smooth and spreading consistency.
